Helix Award

The coveted Helix title is for organisations or leadership that has demonstrated ultimate resilience during times of adversity. 

We invite entries from organisations or individuals who can demonstrate examples of flexibility, agility, adaptability and resilience during internal or industry challenges. Judges are looking for a clear breakdown of the challenge, steps you took to overcome it, how you navigated the crisis and how the measures you put in place positively impacted the outcome. 

Questions:

  1. Briefly describe the crisis or challenge you were posed with including its potential impact on your organisation 
  2. Outline your assessment of the situation and how you devised a plan to overcome the crisis 
  3. Describe how you put this plan into action including managing key stakeholders involved and how you demonstrated crisis leadership as an individual/organisation  
  4. What was the outcome and how did your plan help you overcome the crisis?

Individual Category - Environmental Engineer of the Year

This award is open to all disciplines of engineering and environmental industries. Entries should demonstrate how they are involved with activities that contributes to sustainable development through:

  1. Contributing to building a sustainable society.
  2. Applying responsible judgement through professional leadership.
  3. Complying with, as well as challenging, legislation and current codes of practice.
  4. Use of available resources.
  5. Collaborating to solve sustainability challenges.
  6. Minimising adverse impact and maximising benefit to Society and the Environment.

Individual Category - Road Transport Engineer of the Year

This award is open to candidates working in the Heavy Goods Vehicle or Bus & Coach industry who are skilled problem solvers, methodical in their approach to safety and inspection of vehicles and have wide ranging technical and regulatory knowledge. Multi-skilled in electrical, mechanical, diagnostics & inspection, which sets them apart as experts, they will take preventive measures to ensure the safety of vehicles, drivers and the public.

Individual Category - Plant Engineer of the Year

This award recognises the important work done by plant engineers who have made an outstanding contribution to any aspects of plant, services or facilities engineering. Entries should clearly demonstrate how the candidate improved maintenance and operational efficiency of fixed or mobile machine assets, keeping them to exacting safety standards and at peak performance to the end of their operational life.

Individual Category - Engineer Surveyor of the Year

This award highlights the important role of the Engineer Surveyor in promoting health and safety culture in the workplace. The entries should clearly demonstrate the candidate’s professional approach when carrying out hands-on inspections of a wide range of plant and equipment within their specific discipline (lift & crane / pressure mechanical / LEV / power press). Entrants will also demonstrate experience preparing and submitting reports of examination following the inspections to the highest standard and assisting clients to become compliant with essential Health and Safety workplace legislation.

Individual Category - SOE Volunteer of the Year (via nominations only by SOE members)

This award is open to SOE volunteers only who have shown the greatest commitment and dedication to raising the profile of engineering, with emphasis on supporting activities that improve standards of safe, efficient, and sustainable engineering. A nomination could be made for an individual who conducts professional registration reviews or is involved in SOE events or projects. 

This category is open to all volunteers (excluding members of the Trustee Board). Nominations are to be made by another member of SOE.

Individual Category - Future Leader (via nominations only by managers/mentors/coaches)

This award is open to rising stars of the industry. It is aimed at apprentices or young engineers who strive for the maximum knowledge and practical skills and embrace new technologies. It could also be awarded to an individual who acts as an ambassador for the engineering profession, to inspire more people to consider an apprenticeship as a viable career alternative.  

Managers of apprentices and young engineers are invited to enter their rising stars to this title.

Individual Category - Safety Specialist of the Year

The Safety Specialist Award is open to individuals in the areas of safety initiatives or innovation, safety invention or for safety leadership. Entries should clearly demonstrate professionalism in the prevention of safety incidents through their work to deliver tangible improvements in safety either within their company or within their industry.

Company category - Engineering Company of the Year

Are you an engineering firm who has boldly pushed boundaries to promote safety practices or innovative solutions in your industry? We’re eager to hear from organisations who can demonstrate their commitment to the greater good of the society – this could be in the form of campaigning in your local areas, influencing policymakers or government bodies, shifting perceptions or behaviours towards embracing safety best practices or adopting advanced technologies to propel the industry forward.  

This category is split by company sizes, and companies of all sizes are welcome to apply.  

  • Small Companies under 100 employees 
  • Medium Companies between 100 and 500 employees 
  • Large Companies over 500 employees

  1. Which company size category are you applying for?

Company category - Safety Innovation of the Year

Have you developed a new technology or solution that has solved a wider industry problem concerning equipment or worker safety, or enhanced the current safety standards? This category welcomes entries from organisations across any sector, and entrants must be able to demonstrate the functionality of the solution and provide evidence or a case study illustrating the effectiveness in practical application. 

Questions: 

All questions should be answered with a maximum of 250 words per question. 

  1. Briefly summarise why your innovation deserves to win the award in one of the following three categories:   
    • Revolutionary solution to a big industry concern 
    • Enhanced worker safety  
    • Elevated safety standards

Company category - People Development Champion

If you are an employer who have invested in your people development – in the form of apprenticeships, Professional Registration, membership for your staff or any other career progression scheme, we’d like to hear from you. Tell us why people development is important to you, how you are investing in your people and share examples from your employees on how this has impacted their career.

All questions should be answered with a maximum of 250 words per question. 

  1. Briefly summarise why your company deserves to win the award by providing evidence of initiatives you’ve implemented with the goal of ‘people development’. The judges are looking for a detailed breakdown of what the initiatives entail with a minimum of two testaments/quotes from current employees.

SOE region of the Year (via nominations only by SOE members)

This award is open to IRTE centres, SOE regional groups or BES regions. Entries should clearly demonstrate their success in the areas of member engagement and supporting webinar efforts that contribute to improving standards of public safety and promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly engineering. 

Nominations are to be made by members of the SOE.
