What do we offer our members?
Membership of SOE helps you get the most from your professional engineering career. SOE supports and guides you, offering a personal, professional and friendly service. Whether it’s through sharing knowledge, providing practical advice or gaining professional registration, we can help you take the next step. We have a membership type convenient to your career stage.
Gain professional status
AMSOE, MSOE or FSOE post nominal letters are a signal to fellow engineers, employers, and clients that you take pride in your career, keep your professional knowledge up to date, and have met the standards of a Professional Engineering Institution (PEI).
Membership of the Society at MSOE or FSOE levels are gateways to professional registration with Engineering Council or Society for the Environment. Accreditations from either of these bodies will give you an internationally recognised qualification which enables you to benchmark yourself as a competent engineer.
Learn with our CPD library and member publications
SOE publishes two monthly technical journals for its members.
- Operations Engineer - the leading CPD based journal to help improve skills and knowledge in maintenance and repair
- Transport Engineer - the premier technical and features publication for HGV and PSV engineers
When you join the Society, depending on your professional sector, you will get both these magazines in digital format on the 'My SOE' area of the website.
SOE members get exclusive CPD & technical knowledge support with access to around 2,000 feature articles from past issues of the magazines, and also Plant Engineer, our previous publication.
Network through events, webinars and awards
SOE runs a strong calendar of events for our members, aimed at keeping their CPD up to date. Our regions both in the UK and overseas run over 300 technical workshops, lectures and conferences a year - the majority of which are included as part of your membership with no charge.
We also run webinars for those members who would rather access CPD content at a time convenient for them.
Our flagship competition is the IRTE Skills Challenge, an annual event for PSV technicians which celebrates best practice engineering and champions both qualified technicians and the work of apprentices. We also run engineering student award competitions across UK and Hong Kong in conjunction with local higher and further education establishments.
Progress through career and job support
For our apprentice, student and newly qualified members, our SOE apprenticeship jobs board is free to use, and it is where our member firms post the latest vacancies. We also offer content and articles to help you pass your next interview or brush up on your presentation skills.
If you are a more experienced SOE member, then we support your professional registration. You can request a mentor for Incorporated and Chartered Engineer applications, arrange a workplace assessment for Engineering Technician, or use the Operations Engineer and Transport Engineer job boards to find the latest vacancies in your sector.
For all members, we offer the chance to easily and simply monitor and record your CPD online, and provide templates and guidelines for those who are new to the process.
