Assessment available soon to give technicians the skills and knowledge to safely isolate and reinstate a large electric vehicle’s high voltage system

Development of the new irtec licence module, ‘Large Electric Vehicle’, is complete, and the Society is open to those from industry wishing to register interest in the technician accreditation.

The Expert Working Group (EWG) confirmed that the trial and test stage was successful, and all parties are satisfied that the module is ready for market.

The EWG, chaired by The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Awarding Product Specialist Dave Skelly, is made up of influential organisations that have made a pledge to the effective maintenance of electric vehicles. It has representatives from IRTE, Scania GB, First Bus UK, Arriva, Woldsway Training, Freight Transport Association (FTA), Veolia, Electra Commercial Vehicles, Stagecoach and IMI.

As high voltage vehicles are becoming more commonplace in the fleets of major operators in the UK, the assessment will give technicians the skills and knowledge to safely isolate and reinstate a large electric vehicle’s high voltage system. The module is suitable for vehicles with a hybrid (electric and internal combustion engine) and plug-in electric drive system.

Bruce McGill, SOE Chief Executive, said: “The road transport sector has openly embraced hybrid and electric vehicle technology and now is the time to give the technicians the industry standard accreditation they need to safely maintain these complex machines.”
