The UK engineering industry is facing a skills crisis, intensified by factors including an aging workforce and advances in technology. Demand for skilled technicians and engineers significantly outweighs supply, and the need for a highly trained, professionally recognised workforce is clear.

The Society of Operations Engineering (SOE) is working to combat this, through initiatives like the IRTE HGV Skills Challenge, and collaborating with industry partners to support apprentices and graduates.

SOE is a professional engineering membership body that supports and elevates engineers across multiple sectors by promoting high standards, professional registration, and ongoing skills development.

SOE Chief Executive Emma Thompson said addressing the skills gap was a focus area for the Society.

“We consider how our different initiatives can help to close the skills gap, empowering engineers to upskill and pursue career progression,” she said.

The SOE’s recent IRTE HGV Skills Challenge tested technicians across real-word workshop tasks, including diagnosing and assessing electrical issues and tyre condition and safety, measuring brake wear and disc runout, evaluating key engine components, detailed vehicle inspections delivered by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

“Initiatives like these, along with our industry partnerships and our commitment to supporting graduates and apprentices, are helping to strengthen the pipeline of highly skilled engineers,” she said.

“We welcome employers and organisations across the engineering landscape to engage with SOE as we drive new, practical solutions to the skills gap.

“Skills-based competitions are just one example of how we can elevate and support the technician workforce together.”

The SOE recently partnered with T&RS Engineering, who signed a Memorandum of Understanding with us, verifying their graduate development program meets the Engineering Council’s Incorporated Engineer Professional Status.

Professional Registration also plays a vital role in supporting both individuals and employers in bridging the skills gap, and SOE is licensed by Engineering Council to register suitably qualified members for Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Engineer.

These titles provide employers and the wider engineering sector with assurance of engineers’ capability and professionalism, building a pipeline of skilled professionals who meet national and international standards, while supporting the safe and efficient adoption of new technologies.

SOE’s work supporting professional development, promoting industry-aligned standards, and advocating for robust training pathways provides a crucial foundation for building a competent, future-ready workforce.

As companies continue to innovate, SOE is committed to partnering with organisations across all sectors to ensure that the engineering talent pipeline remains strong, adaptable, and equipped with the skills needed to keep vital industries moving.
